In 45 years of golf I have seen all kinds of gimmick tees. Brush tees, cup tees, tees with a head so small it is difficult to get the ball to sit on it, tees with prongs, and many others. In my experience, none of them work any better than a plain wooden tee, although they are certainly more expensive. . I prefer wood to plastic, because if left on the course, the wooden tee will eventually biodegrade. Plastic tees are going to have to be picked up by someone. Imagine hitting a baseball off of a tee-ball tee and then imagine hitting it off of the ground. Same thing for golf. It allows you to use a flatter faced club (driver on longer holes) in order to get more air time and distance. If you used that same club off of the ground, it wouldn’t go as far, be as accurate, or have as much hang-time in the air.
If I’m going to play a course I haven’t seen before, I’ll probably just pick the white tees and go. But the deciding factor for me is how many par-4 holes are over 400 yards, then whether the par-3 holes are all over 180–200 yards, and whether most of the par-5s are over 520 yards. I feel I should be capable of reaching 12–14 of the greens in regulation (not that I will, but I should be capable of it). If I can’t from the tees I pick, I should move forward. I don’t mind playing a third of the holes for bogeys – but I don’t want to play all of them for bogeys. It is a 1.5 in. to 2.5in Wood/plastic tee. Actually, there are several metrics that might help a player choose which tees to play. Many golf courses recommend tee boxes based on one’s handicap. I’ve never felt that was the best method of deciding because it assumes low handicap players are also very long off the tee, so should be playing from the back tees. (I’m old, but with a fairly low handicap. But playing from the back tees makes most courses inaccessible for me.) That said, I know three old guys who always play from the back tees – they have fun. But I hate to play behind them because they don’t have the game for it, and it takes them forever to play a round of golf. But there are two metrics I’ve heard of for recreational golfers (and they give about the same results) linked not to one’s average score or handicap, but rather to how far one hits the ball typically. One method is to multiply the average ‘good’ driving distance by 25.5 – and pick the tees that are closest to that total yardage on the course. The other method is similar: multiply your six iron distance by 36 – and use that total yardage. For example, if you can hit your 6-iron 200 yards, you should be able to play a 7200 yard course. If you hit it 150 yards, then pick the tees that give a total yardage of 5400 yards.
