If you, like me, are buying OTR then it is worth having a couple of details tweaked by an alterations tailor, or doing it yourself. As with jackets you need to make sure the shoulders fit. In the image below you can see the points marked in green are in the right place. If they sit on another part of the shoulder, or fall down the arm then the short is a bad fit and will be beyond all but the most expensive alterations. The second area to have altered is the sleeve length. This should allow for just a little short to show under your jacket. For most of the world the ideal is around ¼”. Americans tend to go for a little more. Of course.
Finally almost all OTR shirts have large barrels – the cuff that goes around your wrist. I have particularly slim wrists apparently, but I often see men with shirts riding up their arms or drooping down over their hands. This is an easy, easy fix – just move the button in a smidge. Normally ⅛ or ¼ of an inch will be enough to make it fit correctly. This does mean forgoing cufflinks, but they always work better with double-cuffed barrels I think. [1]: Almost never white however. That is not a good colour for men with my colouring. I tend to wear blue, pink or ivory.

No handwork and not the best quality, but for workday shirts I think they’re fine. Pink is a little more expensive, and the cotton reflects that, but there’s not much in it. If you’re shopping then get the one that fits you best and has a collar style you like. Pink do a range of shirts at over £200, but for that money I’d go to one of the Jermyn Street makers. is missing from that list. That’s because the fit doesn’t really work for me. They’re reasonable shirts however, for the price.
