From my personal experience, Japanese Akita is more energetic than American Akita. When they were in off-leash trails, my dog loved playing chase and always was crazy friendly with people she knew. She never stood still or sat. But the American Akita was more calm , laidback, and much slower. She never ran to people, just jogged, and always sat or stood there watching other dogs running, then took the shortcut to finish the chase.
They also bark differently. American Akita only bark, and the sound is lower. When my dog warned, she did not just bark, she howled. American Akitas are more dog tolerant than Japanese Akitas. Although so far my dog has good temperament and can play with most dogs she met, most male Japanese Akitas I knew (6 out of 8), can never be trusted near other strange dogs. They both have sensitive stomach, can’t handle high energy food, hate all kinds of veggies and are easy to have allergy. They are also clean and easy to take care of. If they have choices, they always run into the bush to do their “business”. Never soil the house, even when they had diarrhea.
