So, how did somebody get an estimated 10 micrograms (ten millionths of a gram) of polonium-210? Well, you make polonium-210 by neutron irradiation of Bismuth-209. You need a lot of neutrons. As in a nuclear reactor. To quote Wikipedia: Only about 100 grams are produced each year, practically all of it in Russia, making polonium exceedingly rare. (Polonium ). Now, fortunately, almost all bismuth is bismuth-209, so it is easy to get a bismuth-209 target. The only thing you really need is access to a high neutron flux reactor. There are a few active nuclear plants in the UK. As far as getting into one, placing a bismuth target in the core, retrieving the target, and separating the polonium without killing yourself (did I mention the LD50 for Polonium 210 is estimated at 50 nanograms)? Unlikely at best.
However, any assassin worth his salt would have started with the polonium in a sealed container and only removed it from the container when it was time to poison Litvinenko. Thus, no trail in to London, but a small trail after using the weapon. If you ask me, if would look so much like the world we live in that you’d hardly be able to tell the difference. There was an itinerant Jewish rabbi preaching an apocalyptic message to a small band of followers about 20 centuries ago. This man was named something like Yeshua and lived and was likely born in Nazareth, a provincial backwater in Judea. He made the mistake of preaching a message the Roman authorities considered seditious around Passover, a time when they were especially on high alert for such messages. For this he was summarily tried and executed via crucifixion, a method of capital punishment the Romans reserved for those they wished to humiliate: slaves, outlaws, and political agitators.
Honey is basically just sugar water. When you heat it, the crystals melt. When you boil it, you drive off the water and the sugars that remains begin to caramelize. If you keep boiling it, the sugars will burn. Polonium-210 is an interesting isotope. It is extremely radioactive, but emits very little gamma radiation. It has a half-life of a little more than 138 days. The vast majority of its decays are alpha particles. Side note: A short half-life is exactly what you want for a medical isotope. You administer the material, it goes to the site(s) you want to see, decays, and is gone. However, medical isotopes, for example Technetium-99m, has a half-life of around 6 hours–far shorter than polonium-210. Medical isotopes generally are good gamma emitters because gamma rays will penetrate the body to get to the detectors. Alpha particles are stopped by a millimeter of tissue. Alpha particles are still dangerous–they will break up tissue much more effectively than gamma rays. Sort of like being hit with a bowling ball instead of a high velocity needle.
