The cameras aren’t recording audio and video all the time because that would create several times as much video as with the record-on-command method, and video storage is already expensive enough. There are also privacy issues, such as using the bathroom and casual conversations with fellow officers. The badge that officers wear on their shirts and jackets has a rounded, dome shape in profile. They’re sometimes called “bubble badges” for that reason. This makes for a more attractive, three-dimensional appearance when worn on the uniform or on a clip attached to a belt. It also adds considerable thickness to a wallet or badge case when carried in one.
The buffer recording is silent, recording video without sound. The buffer can be up to three minutes long, but most BWCs are set to a 30-second buffer. When the officer pushes the activation/record button, or the camera goes into a record mode by way of some other designated event (emergency lights coming on, siren activated, speed above a certain threshold, etc.), the contents of the buffer are appended to the start of the active recording.
